It’s time to say goodbye. The truck has served me well, but after two years of little use, it’s best to let it go. Here’s the issue. Two years ago it failed inspection due to a cracked windshield. I didn’t need it at the time, so I didn’t bother with the repair, let the registration expire, and took it off my insurance. I still started and drove it down the street every couple of weeks to keep it all in working order, but to allow test drives, I’m looking at a the cost of a new windshield, getting it re-registered, and putting on my insurance.
I can’t see spending $400 just to sell it.
Help me Oppo, is there another way?

sell it out of state, or with an as-is statement noting that it wont pass inspection.
or sell it to an opponaut to use in some cheap race series

You’re fucked. May as well just give it to me.

You look to be in a tightly clustered neighborhood where there isn’t likely a huge police presence. Jump your plates over for test drives and don’t go to main streets, is what I would do, but you should do that at your own risk and be aware of the potential consequences of misrepresenting an unregistered car with alternate plates.
It’s not your responsibility to inspect or register the car or disclose defects if you sell it as-is, but I still would. For all you know someone will pick it up and trailer it home to sit in their lawn.

In my experience selling way too many cars on Craigslist, it is best to put the money and time in unless you are just looking to dump the car and don’t care what you get for it.
Call up a mobile windshield repair service and they will do it in your driveway. Most cost me around $150. Clean the car real well...inside and out. Let people test drive (with you in the car) or drive them around just the neighborhood and explain that it is unregistered and uninsured. Obviously use discretion here...don’t put yourself at risk.
I haven’t had problems selling uninsured cars in the past. I think part of it is being upfront and honest...point out the flaws and the buyer won’t worry that you’re hiding an issue that would only present at freeway speeds.

It’s one of those small neighborhoods tucked into the countryside, but there’s an officer living right down the road from me. The truck currently sports its old Texas plates, but that doesn’t take care of insurance issues.

A new windshield is about $200. It’s about as clean as it’s going to get. It’s had a rough life, so I’m not expecting much from it. The clearcoat is peeling and the headliner is sagging. It runs fine, but it has an exhaust leak. It has almost new tires, ball joints, radiator, a/c compressor and brakes. But the whole package is just a little worn out.
I hate to throw good money into the truck with little chance of getting it back.

Gotcha. Might be worth fixing the easy stuff (headliner, exhaust, window) if you can do it on the cheap. Otherwise, just sell it as is. Somebody will by it either way...it’s just a matter of how much effort and time you want to put in vs. money you want out.

If you think fixing the truck will net you more than $400 extra than selling as-is, then go for it. If it’s close to break even or less, then just sell it as-is.

I mean, you can do it fully above board, which costs money, or you can not, which doesn’t. There’s not really a third option
(I mean, I guess spend money and not be above board is technically the third option but that doesn’t make much sense)

I thought about that option. It isn’t clear that it will really make much difference to my taxes. It would be dumb to give it away and get absolutely nothing for it.
